CREATIVE WRITING

I've been interested in creative writing, specifically fiction, since I was about 6 years old. In time, my love for the art has only grown--and I'd like to think my skills have as well. Below are a few of my favorite pieces, as well as two that were published!

Published Works

An Unknown Love

"An Unknown Love" was published on the Peel Literature and Arts Review's website in Spring 2019. The story is told from the perspective of the personification of water. The being has fallen madly in love with a human, and laments over its inability to confess its love to her. Although I wish it had a different title, the story itself was one that I actually loved writing. In fact, I was so pleased with the outcome that I read it, out loud, in front of the Peel Release Party! Note: this is an updated version, and is not the same as what was originally printed in the Peel.

An Inkling of Flight

"An Inkling of Flight" was published on the Peel Literature and Arts Review's website in Fall of 2018 and in the print magazine in Spring 2019. The story is about a young girl who dreams of achieving flight. I really enjoyed writing this story, in part because it presented such a strange challenge: finding the voice and thought process of a child. This story has certainly gone through a few edits, but I feel that, for now, I'm satisfied with how far it has come. Note: this is an updated version, and is not the same as what was originally printed in the Peel.

Unpublished Works

Of Shadows and Strawberries

"Of Shadows and Strawberries" is my most recent "finished" work (is creative writing ever really finished?) The story centers follows the life of a strange girl named Hera, who has mystic shadow powers, and her best friend, Javier, a shadow-man. What's unfortunate about this piece is that I originally wrote it with a word limit of three thousand. So, there are a lot of time skips and things that I'd like to go back and fix.

Pumpkinheads

I actually wrote "Pumpkinheads" a very long time ago, and have since re-vamped it in an attempt to submit it to the Peel Literature and Arts Review. They have yet to take the bait, but even if they don't, I'm fairly content with how far it has come since its first draft. The story was originally inspired by a "Goosebumps" tale, and has since evolved into a shiver-inducing, creepy piece of work about a group of inhuman spooks.

Fire and Song

I originally wrote "Fire and Song" as a Christmas present to my grandmother a few years ago. It's got a bit of a fable feel to it, and it centers on two anthropomorphic birds who settle a dispute by having a competition. This is probably the third or fourth version of the story, and although it gets better with each draft, I'd really like to spice it up a bit more. At the moment, it's just sort of purposeless story that doesn't really evoke any feeling from the reader.
